T Rex Alberta Overdrive and Distortion Effects Pedal Demo at Sound Pure Studios

March 52010

Alberta is quite unique; she makes your guitar sing.
She provides instant access to the kind of warm overdrive and emotive distortion usually reserved for 30-year-old tube amps. Alberta delivers a creamy, yet crunchy sound with a smooth mid-range boost, reminiscent of the old Ibanez TS-808.

Recorded with a Neumann U87 into a Great River Electronics MP-2NV and Coles 4038, into a Chandler TG2, and finally a Lynx Aurora 16 AD Converter

Pantha Du Prince – Black Noise album trailer

February 242010

A visual album trailer for Black Noise by Pantha Du Prince.

This trailer is a series of animations linking together the audio clips from Pantha Du Prince’s forthcoming album, Black Noise.

The animations were created by Ashley Dean of Broken Pixel:

“Described by Pantha Du Prince as ‘a frequency inaudible to man, something archaic and earthly, the calm before the storm’, the phenomenon of Black Noise was as much of a challenge to render in visual media as it was to make an album that encapsulated this elusive substance. The central process used for the trailer was part mechanical automation, part digital archaeology; an excavation of still and moving images, looking beyond their native pixels into seams of solid colour and unstable shapes. The forms that were explored came from similar natural sources as the music, the harsh powers of wind and ice, the beauty of distant lightning and the comfort of warm, external rain.
And sometimes, the beats and rhythms of the music engulf and dictate the process. When the bass thumps at the diaphragm, kaleidoscopic waves and pounding concentric circles dominate the screen. When the treble glistens and the microsamples skip and tick, so do the visuals, using myriad techniques to distort and deconstruct once recognisable images.

The visualisation of sound is always a combination of personal expression and artistic expectation but when the music takes hold there is no other option but to let it show you what to do…”

Black Noise is released on 8th of February via Rough Trade Records

Nae’blis – Distorted Mind ..

November 212009

Atmospheric Depressive Black Metal One-Man-Band
from Sweden (Höör).
Formed in 2004 by Magnus Wohlfart
(Yggdrasil, Folkearth, Broken Dagger, Trymheim,
Lömska Planer, Anti-Christian Assault).

*Nae’blis is from fantasy author Robert Jordan’s
“The Wheel Of Time” series. It’s the title and
position granted to the Forsaken – chosen by
the Dark One himself – who will rule over the others.

Discography:

Darktunes Of Depression – Demo, 2004
Beyond The Light – Full-length, 2004
Death of Mankind – Demo, 2005
Death of Mankind…A Dream – Split (with Dominion), 2006
Sketches Of Reality – Full-length, 2007

“Sketches of Reality is one of those albums that makes you feel like it was made just for you. Only in this case, that is a pretty frightening prospect, because this album, and I will quote one of it’s 4 tracks, is a window into a seriously “Distorted Mind”.

Nae’blis utilizes a unique style, and as much as that may be thrown around, it is no lie in this case. The style lies directly within the realm of the depressive black metal, but there are a number of musical techniques that make it what it is.

The first comment should be on the guitars. While they have the similar trebly screech of many other artists, the production is somehow very clear. This unique method brings the sound right into your ears, never seeming distant or far away (like Xasthur, for example). The other unique element in this music is that the notes are always distinguishable. The walls of disonant and screeching distortion are there, but it isn’t made up of a blurred mess of guitars, it is made of the highly layered but individual guitar tones. The heavier parts of the album must have at least 3 or 4 guitar tracks to achieve this sound, and it really is a incredible sound, when there are two wailing guitars over a pair of slowly thrashing drones.

The next comment is on the rest of the instrumentation, which is just as impressive, when combined, as the guitars. The standout instrument here is definitely the piano and organ. Nae’blis has absolutely no problem slowing down the songs, at times to a near stop, for minutes on end, to segway into the next movement using a piano or organ. Each of these passages is indispensible for the development of the bleak mood. In short, probably the best use of organ or piano I have heard in black metal. The drums are good, and that is because they are never overwhelming and do nothing to divert my attention from the music. The vocals are incredible, also low in the mix, and you will often not even notice that they are there, but again they provide the perfect element of insanity and hopelessness. The vocal skills of Magnus are easily enough to lead a more vocal heavy band, but he chooses to lay them up in the background and it works.

As excited I am to talk about how perfectly the instruments work on Sketches of Reality, they are nothing to the song writing. Each song has a dominant minor, or sad, feel to it initially. This atmosphere builds as the single guitars start to add up, the singing starts, etc, and it invariably turns into a distorted opus of sorrow and longing.

Because I don’t want to write a book here and talk about each individual song, I will generalize a bit here. The best part of this album, without question, is a special interaction within the songs, a shift in the moods, while maybe not unique to the genre, has never been done better than on this album. That interaction should be familiar to us all: the sad riff shifts a chord or two, and turns into a soaring melodic wall of distortion, that may even sound “happy” because it uses a major progression. Because of the way the guitars build up, Nae’blis truly makes these moments mighty, spine tingling times. But the true genious, the splendor of depressing music, the gem of this album, is when Magnus brings you out of that melodic moment. Because when you are coming down, wrenched from that sonic bliss, is when you are most susceptible to sorrow and fear and anger, and that is when Nae’blis will hit you, when the vocals, the drums, the guitars, the piano all make sense.

Even all the things above, my pouring over the wonderfullness of it all, is not necessarily enough to merit such a high score. What puts Nae’blis in the stratosphere is that every track (all 4 of them) is just as powerful as the last. My favorite of them has rotated over the months, and only the title track has yet to be my favorite of the 4, though I’m sure it will just listening to it now (it has the most powerful piano on the album). Each track is a standout, this album is perfectly consistent, and unless something tops it, it will stand at the top of my list for this year.”

Trying to get Steve Vai’s Sound!!!

October 252009

HQ Stereo version: http://es.youtube.com/watch?v=akabLgfRNZA&fmt=18

Well… I’ve got the incredible Ibanez JEM 7V and I wanted to get a rig setup so close as possible to Vai’s sound and to check how it’s heared in youtube. Just a test video, I think I will post a “The Crying Machine” cover shortly after some little tweeks…

Using the JEM and Guitar Rig 3 to model the sound in Cubase SX, a good EQ for the guitar and a stereo expander and a limiter for the final mix. Let’s see if I can get it…

In Guitar Rig 3, using (in this order) the DISTORTION (Boss DS-1), the CHORUS+FLANGER (as a very little of chorus), the Ultrasonic amp (kind of Bogner) and the QUAD DELAY (instead of any kind of reverb) in order to get a cleaner end in the solos with a little of deepness also… Settings:

* Distortion: Vol(5), Tone(1.73), Distortion(2.73).

* Chorus/Flanger: Speed(1Hz), Intensity(3), Width(1.34).

* Ultrasonic: Master(5), Vol(5), Gain(10), Bass(6.14), Middle (4.10), Treble (7.01), Presence(7.51).

* Cabinet: Ultrasonic 4×12, Mic 100% A, Air(1.58).

* Quad Delay: Wet(30.2%, but it will depend on the mix), Time(449ms), Feedback(14.6%), Rate and Depth out (0), Diffusion(10, max stereo).

The tricky thing is that I’m trying to apply an EQ to this overall sound, still working on it:)

You can see that it’s not any kind of playback because of the mistakes I made… The sound of the guitar is 100% real of what I get with the stuff I’ve got. Greetings!

P.D.: after seeing the video in youtube, It’s pretty clear that they use a heavy sound limiter, resulting in loss of deepness of the track and some artifacts like sound level breaks. I’ll try to post the next video with a little less of output and see what happens then, because It looses a lot of overall quality… :( Moreover it sounds in mono by default, so…
