Po Pi Po – Miku Hatsune – Vegetable Juice Dance

April 102010

Just for fun… I found this on Ebaums and got it stuck in my head. Bad. Now, after making this video, I’m sick of it… which was the whole idea.

I tried doing an FFT and using a brick-wall bandpass filter at 3 kHz to isolate the annoying-female-Japanese-whine near the beginning. This sort of worked, except it now sounds like a distorted ambulance siren, so I decided not to mix it in.

Rock Band 2 Custom Chart – Ex’s and Oh’s by Atreyu (X Guitar/Bass/Drums)

April 42010

-SUBSCRIBE-

I had to put an mp3 over the video’s audio because the original video’s audio sounded a bit distorted and messy. It kinda still sounds distorted in some parts of the song in the game as well but it should be fine.

The drums were fairly easy so I thought I’d chart the guitar and bass with it. Since the guitar was already charted in GH2, I pretty much copied it by eye. The bass might not be perfect since it’s hard to hear and I don’t have its stem or anything to hear it clearly. Even though it’s fairly easy compared to most charts, I’m sure many of you enjoy this song and will like playing the chart.

Acoustic Distortion – Fuwa Fuwa Time v1.0

April 12010

It’s the Boss DS-1 distortion pedal. I’m using it with an acoustic-electric guitar. You can already imagine how much harder it is to play those barre chords/power chords on acoustic guitars than electric guitars.

Fuwa Fuwa Time!

And no, I’m not a professional guitarist if you haven’t figured that out yet. Note that this is the first time I’m playing this cover, and I play by ear. I don’t memorize tabs but I do try to listen to chords carefully.

I may not be that skilled, but I know enough to be bothered when people (including myself) don’t play the right chords on top of an MP3 file. I might have done that on this video, so that’s why I released newer versions.

LG Chocolate 3 Fm Transmitter

March 292010

This is my new LG Chocolate 3. I am just showing how the Fm Transmitter works on my durangos stereo. You just pick a station on the phone to broadcast the music on and then get the same station on any fm radio to listen to the music wirelessly from the phone. The sound may sound distorted on the video but it is because I have subwoofers in my Durango and the camera couldnt handle the bass.

Trey Songz ft. Fabolous – Say Aah (ROCK REMIX)

March 262010

**Reupload – Sound was distorted in original**

My friend Jordan suggested that I do a rock remix of Say Aah. I love the melody in this song so i didn’t need much persuasion.

Out of all the remixes i’ve done, this one incorporates the most simple drumming. This is because of two reasons:
1) The original already has tom fills in it. I tried a couple of runs doing fills over the top, and it didn’t sound too great
2) Drum fills are entertaining to watch, but this song didn’t really call for them. To me it is important to still be able to enjoy the music while not watching the video.

Despite having the flu and it being hot in New Zealand, I had fun with this track.

Thanks to Jordan for suggesting this and check out his music on http://noinsurancemusic.tumblr.com/

If you have any questions go to http://formspring.me/playthemdrums

PS – I played all the added instruments on this remix.

Thanks for watching!

(BWV 850) Bach: Fugue in D Major, WTC I (two versions)

March 232010

Here are two versions of the D-major fugue from WTC I. The first is very fast and the second is noticeably slower. Thank you for listening to my experiment, which was made to prove a point.

Choice of tempo is probably the most important aspect in musical performance, not just in Bach but all music. An unnatural tempo leads to an unconvincing performance, whether it be a Bach fugue or a Beatles song. To show this, take your favorite Beatles song and try singing or playing it much slower or faster than the natural tempo. Sounds pretty bad, doesn’t it? Distorted, right? Why should this phenomenon be any different in a Mozart sonata or a Bach fugue? Unnatural tempos lead to not so good performances, period. Apparently, many in the scholarly world tend to overlook this fact.

In arguing for a tempo of 80 or faster, my “opponent” (a very intelligent, well-educated scholar) took a harpsichord recording of someone else, artificially sped it up 10% to 80 per quarter and used it to show that this fugue sounds fine at this tempo. Apparently, he/she couldn’t demonstrate it at this speed his/herself, but had to take an mp3 of someone else and speed it up with a computer.

There are many great musicians on YouTube and elswhere who have recorded this fugue, and you would be hard-pressed to find one at 80 or faster. The reason for this is simple…..because it is an inhumanly fast tempo that distorts the true character. On the other hand, if it were a good tempo, one would expect at least some performers to play it at this speed. But they don’t, and for good reason. A good analogy for this is to take a moderately slow, expressive song like “Yesterday” and sing it lively and allegro at 80 or faster. Sounds pretty distorted and “false”, doesn’t it?

Bach’s student Kirnberger said every piece has a “tempo giusto”, or most natural tempo for the piece. 80 or faster may be good for other fugues, but not this one. It is unnatural sounding and contrived, even if played in a musical fashion. Unfortunately, the idea of “tempo giusto” is one that is often overlooked and neglected, most likely because of our modern-day obsession with speed brought about first by Czerny in the 19th century, and most recently, by influential performers like Glenn Gould.

I do some explaining in the video, however, I would like to add that the slower version makes it much easier to play slight ritardandos and other inflections. Also, it is much easier to play with expression at this speed. Moreover, French overtures were majestic works with a certain sense of gravity and feeling. The extremely fast version is too rushed to do much of anything other than trying to race to the end. I find it almost impossible to play with any sense of expression at this tempo. The difference in duration is twenty seconds.

This video also raises the issue of playing an extremely fast tempo “because you can” vs. playing a slower tempo out of choice. I also show this in my video of Liszt’s “La Campanella”, which I deliberately play slower than the norm even though I could play it faster if I wanted to. Just because I have fast fingers and can play this fugue at 80 or faster, does this make it right? Just because it may sound exciting from a purely subjective sense, does this make it better than at a slower tempo? I guess this all depends on your own opinion, but I seek historical truth. My research shows Bach’s standard overture tempo was 63, which is why I find this faster version “false” in a way.

Also, I may add that personally I am opposed to overdotting or doubledotting. This has nothing to do with historical scholarship, but rather, I just don’t like the sound of overdotting. Also, I prefer the 16ths played staccato or non-legato. I can’t prove this, but I believe Bach meant what he wrote, and thus, overdotting distorts his intentions.

I also made this video to try out a new hand view, which I will use for my next series of videos. I’m playing on a rebuilt 1929 Model L Steinway with original ivory keys (5′ 10″). I like it better than most 9-foot concert grands I have played in large halls, which is why I prefer to do all my recording in my living room. Thank you for viewing and for voicing your opinions!
