T Rex Alberta Overdrive and Distortion Effects Pedal Demo at Sound Pure Studios

March 52010

Alberta is quite unique; she makes your guitar sing.
She provides instant access to the kind of warm overdrive and emotive distortion usually reserved for 30-year-old tube amps. Alberta delivers a creamy, yet crunchy sound with a smooth mid-range boost, reminiscent of the old Ibanez TS-808.

Recorded with a Neumann U87 into a Great River Electronics MP-2NV and Coles 4038, into a Chandler TG2, and finally a Lynx Aurora 16 AD Converter

Duration : 0:3:15

what is a good distortion/effect pedal for a beginner guitar player?

January 62010

cus i the normal sound of my guitar is weak

boss is great.
if you get your first boss pedal, it will most likely be the boss ds 1 http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Boss-DS1-Distortion-Pedal?sku=151258

pedals can get pricey, so that’s when danelectro enters.
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/navigation?N=100001+5&Ntk=All&Ntt=danelectro&Nty=1
danelectro is known for making cheap but still good effect pedals. good for beginners. however, i have heard that it picks up radio signals.
i haven’t tried lots of danelectro stuff, only the honeytone amp, but i would say that is a good cheap beginner pedal (i have tried a few pedals)

boss is great. you won’t be dissapointed. but for 40 dollars, that’s not expensive at all.
go with anyone of these , and you’ll be good.

How can I make my bass guitar sound like a electric guitar?

December 232009

I know a little bit about it by using distortion pedals, but is there any other effects i can use? What I am aiming for is doing a guitar solo on a bass, that sounds bad ass just or equal to a ele guitar solo.

I suppose that you could use any effect you want. Gene Simmons used a lot of distortion and echo during his solo before "God Of Thunder".

Mike Anthony (during the Van Halen heyday) used an Electro-Harmonix Bass micro-synthesizer to get some pretty strange noises.

As far as bass soloists go, Billy Sheehan is probably the all-time king. He does a lot of tapping and stuff, but doesn’t use a lot of effects.

So, it really kind of depends on if you’re going for something melodic (like Sheehan) or something noisy (like Simmons).

Either way, don’t forget that your first job is to hold down the groove.

Good luck.

How to get that 311 effect on guitar?

December 202009

I’m not used to electric guitars, since I’ve been playing acoustic for a while now.

I want to know what pedals, distortion, effects, etc. i need to get the 311 sound.

Help a bro out:)

Simple answer: Don’t. Get an overdrive pdal, and that shoudld suit any kind of metal. Use a distortion pedal on a lighter setting and that will give a more moderate sound.

how to make a shoegaze sound with guitar, like my bloody valentine?

December 22009

I love bands like My bloody valentine and the jesus and marry chain. How do you make that sound they play? i know it takes allot of effects and such but im really inexperienced in guitars or any other equipment. i am just starting to play the guitar, but i want to play that distortion sound MBV has. please give me some info some products links please thanks.

Kevin has been quoted a couple of times saying that his tone is just a guitar plugged straight into an amp. Also, round the time of "Loveless" especially, he got really into reverse reverb, and actually went so far as to (in some cases) completely remove the original "dry" track, so all you’re hearing is reverb. Sadly, it’s difficult to reproduce live. Luckily though, any sort of digital reverb unit will suffice, especially when combined with a digital delay — turn the gain way up, and you’ve got a pretty decent imitation (this is how I get that special tone). Try to keep your EQ pretty flat, with a slight preference for the lower end.

Another thing that’s important to know is that Kevin pioneered the use of the tremolo arm of his Jazzmaster in shoegazing music. By holding the arm in his hand while he strummed, it would create a slight "whammy" affect, which, combined with the reverb and delay, made that droning warbling affect that makes the ignorant masses compare "Loveless" to a sample of whale-calls.

Hope this helps.

is it better to get a amp with effects built in or an effect pedal?

November 222009

i have a practice amp and like to play along with songs and i cant get my guitar to sound like any of the songs need more distortion and effects in stuff should i get a better amp or get a effect pedal

A pedal could really help and might cost less then I really good amp. Roland has a great multiple effects pedal for only $200 that make yur guitar sound great =]
