Pantha Du Prince – Black Noise album trailer

February 242010

A visual album trailer for Black Noise by Pantha Du Prince.

This trailer is a series of animations linking together the audio clips from Pantha Du Prince’s forthcoming album, Black Noise.

The animations were created by Ashley Dean of Broken Pixel:

“Described by Pantha Du Prince as ‘a frequency inaudible to man, something archaic and earthly, the calm before the storm’, the phenomenon of Black Noise was as much of a challenge to render in visual media as it was to make an album that encapsulated this elusive substance. The central process used for the trailer was part mechanical automation, part digital archaeology; an excavation of still and moving images, looking beyond their native pixels into seams of solid colour and unstable shapes. The forms that were explored came from similar natural sources as the music, the harsh powers of wind and ice, the beauty of distant lightning and the comfort of warm, external rain.
And sometimes, the beats and rhythms of the music engulf and dictate the process. When the bass thumps at the diaphragm, kaleidoscopic waves and pounding concentric circles dominate the screen. When the treble glistens and the microsamples skip and tick, so do the visuals, using myriad techniques to distort and deconstruct once recognisable images.

The visualisation of sound is always a combination of personal expression and artistic expectation but when the music takes hold there is no other option but to let it show you what to do…”

Black Noise is released on 8th of February via Rough Trade Records

EMG 81/85 vs. Seymour Duncan Blackouts LQQK!

February 212010

UPDATE: I now have a decent video camera. I hope to give you a new comparison demo of these two pickup sets in the same guitar straight through my Bugera 333xl dry with no eq’s or effects coloring the sound. It will be RAW! NO 18 VOLT MOD WILL BE USED FOR THE UPCOMING DEMO. LET’S SEE WHO RUNS BEST WITH 9 VOLTS! Stay tuned!

NOTE: The slight distortion you hear in the clean demos is due to the volume feed being too loud during the recording. The volume was set for the emgs and the blackouts are a little louder than the emgs, but I forgot to compensate on the volume. This is why the blackouts distort slightly on the clean demos. The distortion is not there live. I appologize for this.

This is a direct comparison of an EMG 81 85 set and a Seymour Duncan Blackouts set. The same guitar, effects, and settings was used for both sets. The guitar had the 18 volt mod on both sets. I used a Digitech RP350. Clean demos on neck and bridge done with patch 5 “coolch” Neck dirty demo patch 4 “boogmn”, Bridge dirty demo patch 1 “plxdrv”, and Bridge high gain patch 19 “mtlhed”. Comparisons don’t get any more direct than this.

Sorry for the poor showmanship. I know I’m not a great guitar player, but I’m not doing this to impress you with my skills, but merely to show you the difference in tone between EMGs and Blackouts. I hope this video helps you in your quest for your perfect tone.

All positive comments are welcomed and encouraged. Negative and profane comments WILL BE REMOVED.

If you rate my video, rate it according to the purpose it was meant for and not according to my skill. Thanks for your understanding.

Why does the music on my iPod touch sound distorted?

February 162010

The music on my iPod sounds really strange right now. Some of the songs are fine but some sound really weird. They sound like their in slowmotion and the singers are wayyy off key.
Can any one help me figure out this problem? (ps this only happens in my speakers)
And just for fun does anyone like the Percy Jackson series?

Um, since it only happens with your speakers (not sure if you mean internal or external) then it might just be you speaker went bad or there is a bad connection somewhere. I’ve head headphones where the band sounded metallic or there was no singer because of a loose headphone connection.

Having some fun with my JSX in the rehearsal

Hello dear friends!
Today I took my car and set out for my bands’ new rehearsal. I brought my Ibanez JS1200CA with me and a CD with a couple of backing tracks on to have some fun with!

At first, I was going to make like six or seven new videos, but I decided to cut the material, so I ended up with a ten minute video of a handful clips.
I took a 35 minute video non-stop and the result you can see here.

The sound might distort a little bit, but that’s only because the high volume, almost eleven I think *lol* Anyway, my video camera isn’t too fond of high volumes, stupid thing! Haha!

The guitar is an Ibanez JS1200CA with a DiMarzio Breed in the bridge (thanks Magnus Olsson). The amp is a Peavey JSX. For effects I use an Alesis Midiverb 4 in the fx loop, no distortion/overdrive pedals.

You can see a brown ugly combo to the right and that’s an Acoustic Control Corporation model 164 amp which I feed with the right channel signal out from the Alesis. So it’s all the sound of the JSX, but in stereo, don’t think that gets through in the video though…

As you all might know by now, I’m not focused on technique, so this video is more about tone, and the JSX has got plenty of that, trust me!!

Anyway, hope you’ll enjoy it!
Take care

Nady TD-1 tube distortion pedal demo ?

February 92010

I am sorry it took so long .
This is supposed to be my demo of the Nady TD-1 tube distortion box.
There are troubles with the mic connection ..
It may look like I fix the noise with my hand but it’s more like my butt hitting the mic cable.
Starts clean.
I I start with my basic amp sound.
Dropped D jamming on my Tele Elite with active preamp , low imp. pickups and active TBX and MDX used here. A very loud guitar ( See my band vids ) Showing how controllable this sound is.
Using a Boss delay Digitech Delay, Boss PS5 Supershifter and a Boss compressor. Rocktron Austin Gold at the end of the chain but I’m not using it much.
I then turn it up .
Mesa Boogie subway Blues on 2 (7;30 on a clock face) with external closed cab mic’d with Sennheiser e609s
right into my camera . You can sort of see the settings and when I turn the Knobs.
For about the first minute the gain is in lower range . then I do a long time on the middle range which is where I live. By 4 minutes I am up in the high range.
I am also using the MDX on my guitar which adds 20 or so db hehe.
Thanks
Jim

Digitech Hardwire SC-2 Valve Distortion Pedal

February 62010

The Digitech Hardwire SC-2 Valve Distortion Pedal is one of those pedals you try one time and realize the designers thought of everything. Built to last years on the road, anything that could be made of metal on this Hardwire Distortion, is. Constant Voltage through the life of the battery ensures the sound does not “sag” if the battery begins to die out. The Hardwire Valve Distortion Pedal gives you full power until the battery dies then immediately enters true bypass mode so the show can go on. Add to all that the Stomplock guard which keeps your settings from being altered when one of your groupies jumps onstage and bumps the pedal. Brilliant Digitech Hardwire Valve Distortion SC-2.
