Video Phone – Beyoncé (Instrumental / Karaoke)

November 282009

…off her latest album “I am… Sasha Fierce”. This instrumental is remade by me. Sorry that the kickdrum sounds kinda distorted. Youtube lowered the quality but it doesn’t do that noise on the mp3. Hope you still like it!

Here’s the download link. PLEASE don’t repost this instrumental on youtube.

Mad Professor Little Green Wonder Overdrive Pedal

November 282009

www.ProGuitarShop.com – The Mad Professor Little Green Wonder Overdrive pedal is a low compression, high headroom overdrive with high output, and it has a Body knob for adjusting low-mid content and treble.
The LGW was made to be a stackable overdrive that could go anywhere in the pedal chain and the compression normally associated with this type of circuit is reduced same as several distortion mechanisms.
This pedal will work very well with amps and other pedals that have a lot of complexity or compression, a situation that not all pedals work well.
LGW makes a great building block to sound yet it works standalone and especially with humbuckers where normally this type of circuit would not work satisfactory, much due to bass loss and sometimes separated sounds (where transients feed through and a cloud of distortion follows beneath.
Body control gives access to medium midhump at center position and allows treble boost at cw rotation and low mid/treble boost a ccw position and so unit also can provide distortion albeit a smooth type. LGW can be used as an overdrive to already distorting amplifiers or pedals downstream, as well as function as a filter when feed with fuzz pedals that may be rough on some amplifiers and can also be used as light overdrive for just breaking up sounds.
As designer Bjorn Juhl put it:
“Whereas Little Green Wonder is a TS-style pedal, but one for those who don’t generally like TS-style pedals. The big difference between these two pedals would be headroom, distortion style and distortion depth and treble response, output level, function of tone knob, color, symbol…. they do share a common layout of mechanical components.”

Apo Lígo-Lígo – Giórgos Zorbás

November 282009

Here’s the recipe to make a good looking Rebetika music clip with the authentic distorted sound: 1. Put it on an old VHS tape in Long Play Mode. 2. Store it for 12 years in a hot and damp place (the bathroom would do fine). 3. For the finishing touch, upload it to YouTube.

My distant friend George Katsibokis put a link to my channel on his Rebetika Forum, those of you who can read the greek language might want to view it here: http://www.rembetiko.gr/forums/showthread.php?t=18061 Thanks George, the DVDs are coming your way.

This 4th episode in the series “Eis Anamnisis Stigmon Elkistikon” contains songs from Asia Minor written between 1900 and 1925. Untill I get the recordings in a better quality, I will continue uptubing from this tape.

is it better to get a amp with effects built in or an effect pedal?

November 222009

i have a practice amp and like to play along with songs and i cant get my guitar to sound like any of the songs need more distortion and effects in stuff should i get a better amp or get a effect pedal

A pedal could really help and might cost less then I really good amp. Roland has a great multiple effects pedal for only $200 that make yur guitar sound great =]

Guitarists of all genres: what do you think of this Guitar Player list?

November 222009

This list was featured in the October 2007 issue of Guitar Player and is called "The Top 40 Common Newbie Guitarist Mistakes."

It was made up by Harmony Central Forum Members and, in the issue of GP, is not numbered–I just numbered them so you can say which numbers you agree with (or disagree with), instead of the whole statement.

1. Investing in distortion boxes instead of a good amp.
2. Learning 100 intros and no songs.
3. Limiting yourself to one style of music–usually metal.
4. Not taking the time to learn music theory.
5. Playing "Smoke on the Water" on the high-E string.
6. Playing too loud, and with too much distortion.
7. Setting your amp’s Gain on 10, and Mids on 0.
8. Relying on picks.
9. Not learning how to perform a basic setup.
10. Not maintaining your gear.
11. Not jamming enough with other players.
12. Over use of legato with a complete disregard for tempo.
13. Poor phrasing.
14. Weak vibrato.
15. Buying too many effects.
16. Listening to tone snobs.
17. Immediately launching into thirty-second-notes during a blues solo.
18. Thinking that playing the local bar circuit constitutes a "tour."
19. Believing that opening for a national act means you’re on your way.
20. Not knowing the difference between tube watts and solid-state watts.
21. Relying too much on printed music and tabs.
22. Thinking a year of lessons and $5,000 worth of gear makes you ready to play in a band.
23. Wearing the guitar way too low.
24. Using too much hand/finger pressure when fretting.
25. Taking guitar lessons from a friend.
26. Giving up immediately because you sound like dog doo.
27. Not learning how all your gear works.
28. Tuning every guitar at Guitar Center to dropped D, and then not returning them to standard pitch.
29. Bringing full stacks to tiny bar gigs.
30. Saying, "All [insert hated style of music] sucks, dude!"
31. Learning with your eyes, instead of your ears.
32. Not learning to play in time with good groove and feel.
33. Not investing in good earplugs for playing loud gigs.
34. Obsessing about playing burning solos, and not caring about rhythm guitar.
35. Thinking that playing fast pentatonic-box patterns makes you a hot guitarist.
36. Not putting casters on viciously heavy amps.
37. Wearing bowling shirts emblazoned with flames and dragons.
38. Realizing guitar is too difficult and taking up bass instead.
39. Spending more time on Harmony Central than actually practicing.
40. Forgetting that playing music is meant to be fun.

Personally, I actually agree with a lot of this. I mean, how many times have you acted out #30? I have heard so many people say that country sucks just because it’s country. I’ve also heard someone say that they hate jazz. And then, I completely agree with #3. A lot of guitarists do limit themselves to one style of music and, like this list said, it tends to usually be metal. Very rarely will you see a guitarist like the late Danny Gatton who could play ANY style from rock and blues to jazz and country and even rockabilly. It also seems that guitarists who are known as country guitarists are more willing to listen to and play other genres. Take Brad Paisley and Brent Mason, for example. Both are great country guitarists, but they can both play jazz and blues very well. I’m not sure about Mason, but Paisley can even play surf rock and rock (Eric Johnson-style, from the short clip I’ve heard) and just about anything else he wants. #15 is another great one. A lot of guitarists do buy too many effects. Henry Garza–from the Los Lonely Boys–only has a Vox V847 wah and an Ibanez Tube Screamer. I find that spectacular, considering many modern guitarists just want to get as many effects pedals as they want. Even I tend to want a lot of effects from the Keeley-modified Boss BD-2 Blues Driver and the Keeley Compressor to the Vox V847 wah, the Visual Sound Route 66 Overdrive/Compression and a lot more than I’m listing.

What do you think of "The Top 40 Common Newbie Guitarist Mistakes" list? What do you agree with and what do you disagree with? Also, what would you add to the list?

haha, i agree with most of them, especially 21, 22, 26, 34, and 39. They are the oness i see the most with people. I don’t agree 100% with number 2. I think that learning many different soloing riffs help improvising a lot. But learning no songs is going to get you nowhere. back in the days when i got my first guitar i was guilty of 39. but that didn’t last long b/c i knew that no practise = no progress. I believe that most kids now, start guitar to get the girls, be cool, etc. and they end up running into number 26. there are those that dream and those that work at it, so motivation is the key to success.

guitar effects pedals, what do I need for a heavier sound?

November 222009

I have a Marshall combo and an Epiphone SG copy. I’m fairly adequate at playing the guitar but I want a heavier sound. Without having to invest in a new guitar and amp (lack of funds) can anyone suggest any mid price guitar pedals that could improve my guitar sound. The built in distortion the amp has is good but I want something heavier. Any suggestions?
Excellent advice thanks.
The sound I’m going for is similar to New York hardcore bands Madball, Sick Of It All, Hatebreed and metal bands like Slayer.

There are some great pedals out there and alot depends on the kind of sound you want.

If it’s 70’s Rock you need an overdrive pedal, this will replicate an overdriven guitar and give you that Rock sound, the best on the market is the Ibanez Tube Screamer, but it’s very expensive and it is possible to get a similar sound from a cheaper make.

If you want a real Metal sound, go for a distortion pedal as it gives much more of a Heavy Metal sound or even a Grungier sound.

Some of the best pedals are made by a company called Boss and can be found on ebay, or in any music shop.

Whatever you do I would recommend getting a compression pedal too, they really give a better bass end, add plenty of sustain and level out all of your playing to give a more even sound.

Hope that helps.

How do you create a radio-over effect on a music/sound clip?

November 222009

Sound/music is coming from a radio or a distorted source. Trying to find a way to change vocals to give them a bit more flavor.

If you are referring to old radio. It sounded that way due to poor quality. So all you need to convert it to mono and reduce the bit rate till you get the desired result. Some distortion can also be added with software like Nero Wave Editor.

Why my speaker produce a distorted sound? already installed an amp.?

November 222009

I have 2 500w 6×9 speakers, then installed an amp 800w. The mp3 player directed to RCA input of the amplifier. When the mp3 player reach the volume from 26 and at the end 31, the sound start to distort. Why is it like that? There is something wrong with the installation of the amplifier?

Another question. What is the purpose of high input? What is the thing to connect to the high input?

I have a friend has also the same speakers 2 500w 6×9. But he installed 1200w of an amplifier, but it never distorted. What’s wrong with my installation?

I hope this will be answered. Thanks

nothing is wrong with the install it the mp3 u cant turn it up that high. high level has nothing 2 do with a higher level. its just a dif way of hooking up the amp.
